Vet Advice

Glen Kolenc has been a practising vet for just over 10 years. After working in several veterinary hospitals in Sydney along with a four year working holiday in the UK, he now owns the Petersham Veterinary Hospital in Sydney's Inner West, along with its onsite boarding cattery. Glen's love of animals stems back to his childhood, which prompted him to study veterinary science at the University of Sydney. After graduating in 1997 with honours, he has spent over a decade doing "the most rewarding job in the world".

Glen is our resident Internet Vet here at Dogs and Cats and would like to remind visitors asking him questions that some medical problems can be extremely difficult to diagnose. A certain set of symptoms may be caused by several possible ailments. Therefore nothing can replace a veterinarian obtaining a full history, and performing a thorough examination of your pet. This Q + A segment though does allow for more general queries to be addressed.

Q:My cat has a small cut on its chest which has yellow/brown puss coming out of it. What do you suggest?
A:This sounds to me like the wound has become infected. I would advise that you get your cat checked by a veterinarian to determine the best way to treat the wound. It may require surgery but that would be impossible to determine without veterinary examination.

Q:My dog has had a yearly heartworm injection. What would be the most affordable product to now give her to treat fleas and intestinal worms?
A:Probably the CHEAPEST worm and flea products can be found on supermarket shelves; but I find that these are fairly ineffective products. Please do not waste your money on these just because they are cheap - especially when it comes to flea control - it really does pay to spend that little bit more for something that will give you better results. Given that your dog has had a heartworm injection, the BEST way to cover fleas is either with Advantage or Frontline and the best way to cover for intestinal worms is with an allwormer such as Drontal, Fenpral, Paratek (there are several of these available).

Q:My Westie aged seven has had a little blood in his stools on two occasions this week. Since then his stools have appeared normal. Should I take him to the vet?
A:If it continues then I would certainly take him to the vet (along with a sample of the poo). If it has not recurred since the first two episodes, and your dog has been healthy in all other regards, then monitoring him will be fine.

Q:At what stage can a bitch become pregnant while on heat? How long are they on heat for and bleed? And, is it possible for more than one dog to sire a bitch and produce a 'split' litter?
A:Dogs have around one week coming into season, then about a week in season, then a week coming out of season. Each individual dog's timing will vary, but for a time of between 3 and 10 days in the middle of that cycle is when a bitch is "fully in season" and can get pregnant. And yes, a bitch may father pups from two or more sires!

Q:I had my Burmese cat vacinated on Saturday and today, Wednesday, she has a bald patch at the back of her neck where she got jabbed. Last time I gave her flea treatment she also got a bald patch. Should I be worried? Does it mean anything other than maybe sensitive skin?
A:It would be unusual to develop a bald spot after a vaccination, but relatively common following application of flea preventions. It usually isn't anything to worry about and usually resolves on its own though sometimes some cream can be used to help settle it if it irritates your cat. Try another flea product to see if it doesn't give a reaction.
