Vet Advice

Glen Kolenc has been a practising vet for just over 10 years. After working in several veterinary hospitals in Sydney along with a four year working holiday in the UK, he now owns the Petersham Veterinary Hospital in Sydney's Inner West, along with its onsite boarding cattery. Glen's love of animals stems back to his childhood, which prompted him to study veterinary science at the University of Sydney. After graduating in 1997 with honours, he has spent over a decade doing "the most rewarding job in the world".

Glen is our resident Internet Vet here at Dogs and Cats and would like to remind visitors asking him questions that some medical problems can be extremely difficult to diagnose. A certain set of symptoms may be caused by several possible ailments. Therefore nothing can replace a veterinarian obtaining a full history, and performing a thorough examination of your pet. This Q + A segment though does allow for more general queries to be addressed.

Q:Is it bad if a dog eats flour?
A:I don't think flour is toxic per se, but i expect it'd give your dog a nasty gut ache with gastroenteritis so i wouldnt encourage it. Also, dogs do not have a dietary requirement for flour so best to keep them away from it.

Q:My 12 month old Labrador has been refusing to eat for two days and she is not her normal energetic happy self.
A:Lethargy and being uninterested in food are "vague" symptoms in that they will be the 1st symptoms seen in almost any disease in a dog; so the dog should be checked by a vet.

Q:My dog eat loads of turkey has vomitted and had runs yesterday, lethargic and off food today but quite happy to go for a walk???
A:Take him/her to the vet

Q:My dog frantically scratches and bites his skin. He is quite nervous and highly-strung which, I believe, is causing the scratching and biting. He is currently on Predisil which is not helping at all. I would like to try some Vetalogica products (Omegaderm and Tranquil Formula), The Tranquil Formula contains Tryptophan but the other ingredients are vitamins and supplements. Do you know of any incompatibility between the Vetalogica products and Predisil please?
A:I have to be honest and say that I have not used any of the Vetalogica products so do not know of any incompatabilities it might have with other medicines. You'd be best off asking the vet that recommended you Vetalogica (I assume its the same vet that put your dog onto Predisil?).

Q:I have a two year old de-sexed cat and the problem is that for some reason she will not use her litter tray for urinating. She will use the tray for solids but not for urinating. I have used the Urine Off to over come the smell issue and cleaned carpets, cleaned the litter tray, new litter, etc, to no avail. There is no blood in the urine and she eats well drinks well etc. Can you assist in breaking the cycle that she has now adopted?
A:There could be a number of reasons for "inappropriate urination" in a cat. Any bladder disease (cystitis, bladder inflammation, crystals in the urine and bladder stones to name but a few) can be the cause. Likewise, it can also be a behavioural thing - stress can cause this. The best way to determine medical causes vs behavioural causes is to get your cat checked up by a vet, who may do things like analyse a urine sample, bladder imaging (xrays, ultrasounds), etc.
