Vet Advice

Glen Kolenc has been a practising vet for just over 10 years. After working in several veterinary hospitals in Sydney along with a four year working holiday in the UK, he now owns the Petersham Veterinary Hospital in Sydney's Inner West, along with its onsite boarding cattery. Glen's love of animals stems back to his childhood, which prompted him to study veterinary science at the University of Sydney. After graduating in 1997 with honours, he has spent over a decade doing "the most rewarding job in the world".

Glen is our resident Internet Vet here at Dogs and Cats and would like to remind visitors asking him questions that some medical problems can be extremely difficult to diagnose. A certain set of symptoms may be caused by several possible ailments. Therefore nothing can replace a veterinarian obtaining a full history, and performing a thorough examination of your pet. This Q + A segment though does allow for more general queries to be addressed.

Q:I have a 5 year old male chihuahua he is always, crying not eating now has blood in poop. What is wrong?
A:This is really one of those times when you need to go to the vet,

Q:11 yr old calico tearing up roof of mouth w/paws to the point of bleeding.
A:This is really one of those instances where you need to take your pet to the vet to be checked out.

Q:I have a 12 year old border collie cross and its been three months since his last vet visit. We are currently in a remote area but I have noticed that he is drinking a lot of water and is eating quite a bit of grass daily. I am abit concerned about his liver . Is there a natural flush remedy I can try until return to a vet.
A:Drinking a lot could be caused by a number of things, ranging from being a normal physiological process (for example if the area you are in is very hot, or your dog is excercising a lot more than usual) through to being an indication of a medical condition. There are a number of medical conditions that can cause increased water consumption, such as diabetes, kidney problems, a disease called Cushings disease....to name but a few. As there are a lot of possibilities, there is no such "natural remedy" that I can recommend in this situation. As for the grass eating, this is a normal thing for dogs to do - it is their way of "cleaning themselves out" or "keeping themselves regular" as such.

Q:How often should I feed my 2 year old dog?
A:All dogs should be fed twice per day. The only exception to this is young puppies who should be fed 3-4 times a day (or even more when they are babies).

Q:Hi. I have a purebred Doberman bitch, 6 years old. She appears to have become unsteady just on her hind legs. She falls over even when I push her gently and find it difficult to play without falling over. Otherwise she is eating well, is alert and happy. I have taken her to the local vet who recognises that there is a problem but doesn't know what it is. Can you suggest what should be my next course of action. Thankyou. Jane
A:Hi Jane, The next course of action is to get this investigated further to ascertain the cause of her hindlimb problem. This may incluse another checkup, and possible xrays would be a starting point from there.
