About “sasha & me” – Designs for Modern Pets

I have been so taken by the products I have seen being produced by sasha & me here in Australia that I sent their Director, Claudia, just a few questions to find out more. I have seen the stylish and modern images posted on Facebook. These include pet beds, blankets, bed covers and accessories like collars and leads and dog neck warmers! On further inspection of their website I notice they also sell the Moso Bamboo Range.. products made from bamboo of course. What I had also read is that sasha & me have heart! They donate 5% of all sales to the Bali (Dog) Adoption and Rehabilitation Centre (BARC).

“sasha & me is a label that offers fashionable, contemporary products for dogs and dog lovers.  Each high quality product and accessory has been designed to enhance and strengthen the relationship between people and their four legged-friends”, says Claudia  in her introduction to my questions that follow.

“The brands philosophy is based upon Contemporary Design, Eco Friendliness and Fair Trade”, said Claudia.

Claudia, to get some background on the creator of sasha & me can you tell us a little about yourself?

“I have spent most of my professional life in fashion. Over the years I gained experience in product development, buying and in senior management”, said Claudia.

“Like so many crucial events in life, I started sasha & me by chance, disillusioned by the Australian retail fashion industry, I wanted to do something that I could be passionate about and make a difference, and this is how sasha & me was borne.

I launched the brand in 2012, in my tiny office and stored all my designs in the garage. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to keep the designs clean and modern without the cliché designs that I have seen around the pet stores. I had no idea if I was doing the right thing but I just keep following my instinct and never gave up my vision”, said Claudia.

How else can you describe the sasha & me product range?

“All of our designs are simple and contemporary; we like to compliment our beds and accessories to the individual style and home design – why have a beautiful home but a very average looking pet bed? I never understood the logic of that. A dog bed is a large and unique piece of furniture in your home – be proud to show it off. Your pet after all is part of your family”, said Claudia.

“The next thing we focus on is quality.  We have never compromised and we never will. I want the brand to be something I would be very proud to purchase myself. Therefore we spend numerous hours searching for the best organic fabrics or eco-friendly materials and focus in attention to details and craftsmanship. For example check out the the Moso Bamboo Range.

Sustainability and transparency are today’s inescapable requirements. Consumers want to know where the product comes from, who makes it, how it is made and what are the long-term benefits, for the buyer, for the people we engage with and the environment”, said Claudia.

What’s next for sasha & me?

“Now a year later, we have moved to a bigger office and we are starting to build a strong relationship with many small retailers. We keep it humble and happy and focus on growing our relationship with like-minded people across the globe”, said Claudia.

“We are currently expanding our range and we’re constantly working on new designs.

Last but not least, our goal this year would be to find a distributor in the USA. We have a strong demand over there so we just need to find a company that would value our vision and share our  philosophy of life with our pets”, said Claudia.

We here at Dogs and Cats of course wish sasha & me all the best!

One more thing Claudia – - do you have a special offer for our readers?

“OK – let’s do the travel mats with your readers. We will offer  free postage”said Claudia. To ensure you get this deal just email ckarba@iinet.net.au and mention “special offer”.

Thanks Claudia! Here is the travel mat again..

Outdoor Dog Gear for Your Active Pet

By Lisa A Mason

Do you live a very active life? Is hiking and boating some of your favorite activities? Does your dog like to tag along with you? If you answered yes to these questions, then you need outdoor dog gear for your active pet. Taking your pet along for these activities is a lot of fun.

Dogs can be very entertaining and doing these things together can help build that bond between you and your pet. Here are a couple of items that can help keep your pet safer and make your trips more enjoyable.

Life Jackets

If you spend a lot of time around water, get your dog a life jacket. Dog life jackets are perfect for pets that enjoy riding along on the boat or playing in the ocean. The life jacket will help keep him safe anytime he’s in and around water.

Not all dogs are great swimmers, especially in rough waters. If you take your dog with you fishing, boating or to the beach, you won’t have to worry about her struggling in the water especially if the currents are strong. Anytime you’re around water, there is the possibility of an accident. For example, your pet could fall off the boat or be swept away by a strong current. A life jacket will help keep her afloat in any situation whether she’s just having fun or if an emergency occurs.

Life jackets are perfect for elderly dogs or those with arthritis or joint problems. Swimming can help dogs get the exercise they need without putting added stress on their joints and a life jacket will make it easier for him to swim.

There are several different types of dog life jackets available suited for different breeds and types of water. Some are made with mesh under the belly so the water will drain quickly and the life jacket will dry faster. Some are designed with reflective strips to make your pet more visible and others have added buoyancy for rough water like what you’ll find at the beach.

Dog Backpacks

Outdoor dog gear also includes dog backpacks. These are great for hikers, hunters, campers and they even come in handy for a trip to the park. Your dog needs supplies just like you do. She’ll need food, water, treats and toys so why not let her carry her own supplies. The extra space will make things a lot easier for you.

The saddlebag design distributes the weight evenly so it won’t put too much weight on your pet’s back. This makes them more comfortable and prevents strains. They have storage pouches where you can keep things separated so you can find what you need fast and easy. Most all dog backpacks have adjustable straps for a snug fit and reflective trim to keep him safer.

Most dogs don’t mind wearing a backpack. They can sense they’re doing something good and it makes them feel needed. However, you may need to go on short trips at first until he gets used to it. Outdoor dog gear makes it easier for your active pet to get the exercise needed to stay healthy, fit and safe.

Doggie Clothesline has a wide variety of outdoor dog gear for any size dog.

How to Choose a Dog Coat or Blanket

By Beverly Fox

Do you know how to select the correct dog blanket for your pet? There are many dog coat variations to choose from. They differ in size, durability, warmth, design and color. To choose the correct dog coat, it is necessary to determine the proper size and the type of weather your pet will be exposed to. This article will assist you in determining what’s right for your pet.

How to measure your pet for a coat or blanket

To identify the correct length of coat needed, measure from your pet’s collar to their tail. Some dog blanket sizes are not listed in inches such as the “Techniche ThermaFur Heating Dog Blanket”. There are size charts available for these dog blankets that will assist you in converting from inches to the appropriate size between extra small and extra-extra large.

Size charts vary by manufacturer. If you pet is in between sizes, choose the next size up. Some size charts include a neck measurement and a girth measurement.

To determine the correct neck size, measure around your pet’s neck below their collar to determine the circumference and add an inch. The neck of dog coats should fit firmly but not tight.

To establish the correct girth size, measure around the largest part of your pet’s body at their chest or belly and add an inch.

Is your pet going to be exposed to rain, mildly cold, extremely cold weather or all of these conditions? Is your pet’s fur clipped?

If your pet’s fur is clipped, you’ll need more protection. Below are some variations between the needs of a dog with clipped fur as opposed to one with a full coat.

Clipped Dog Guidelines

Fahrenheit Temperature

  • 45°-55° – Light sweater may be needed
  • 35°-45° – Medium weight dog blankets
  • 25°-35° – Medium weight dog coats with a light lining
  • 15°-25° – Heavy dog blankets with a light lining
  • Below 15° – Heavy weight dog coats with a heavy lining

Un-clipped Dog Guidelines

  • 45°-55° – No sweater needed for many dog breeds
  • 35°-45° – A light dog coat or rain coat if walking in wet weather
  • 15°-35° – Medium weight dog blanket
  • Below 15° – Heavy or medium weight dog coat with a fleece lining

Note: The above suggestions are meant to be a general guideline. Needs will vary based on your pet’s breed, length of fur and the temperatures they’re accustom to.

Is the dog blanket you chose strong enough for your needs?

The strength of the fabric is a key ingredient in purchasing the right dog coat. The lower the denier thread count, the less durable the dog blanket will be.

Another factor to consider is the care of your pet’s wardrobe. If your pet is like most pets, their wardrobe will need to be cleaned regularly. It will save you money in the end if the fabric is durable and machine washable.

Below are some other factors to consider when shopping for the right dog coat.

  • Do you need a waterproof or windproof dog blanket or coat? If so, follow the specific care instruction carefully to ensure the dog coat remains windproof and waterproof.

Note: Waterproof and windproof coats may not be as breathable as other fabrics. Ensure your pet doesn’t get overheated causing him/her to sweat.

  • Do you walk with your pet at night? Consider purchasing a dog coat with reflective tape like the Fleece lined dog coat by High Spirit
  • Do you need a warm insulated dog coat? If so, a fleece lining offers cozy warmth and comfort.
  • Does your pet fight you when you try to dress him/her? If so, look for a design that’s adjustable and easy to put on and take off. Your pet may also be dissatisfied if the dog coat is too rigid or bulky.
  • Would you like your pet’s coat to have pockets? Some dog blankets and coats provide pockets for the owner to carry small items. The “Techniche ThermaFur Heating Dog Blanket” has pockets designed to carry “Techniche Heat Pax body warmers” to provide added warmth for your loyal friend. These heat packs generate heat for over 8 hours and can be suspended to be used again later if they’re packed in an air tight container.

If you keep these factors in mind prior to making the final selection, you and your pet will have many happy walks together.

Features of a Good Dog Sweater

By Praline Ramirez

Yes, dogs have their fur to protect them from winter cold but it is not always enough to keep them warm. And when they feel cold, they urgently find the necessity to curl themselves up in a warm place. They have a need to find shelter from a warm environment but sometimes this does not provide enough warmth. The cold environment will also make them vulnerable to sniffles and chills. You can protect your pooch from these occurrences if you will provide him with a pet sweater.

What makes a good dog sweater? There are certain features to look at in choosing a sweater for your dog. Do not just go for its fashionable design or attractive colors but go for the whole package that the sweater can offer your pet.

Here are some features that you should look for:

1. Cool and comfort. Your pooch must feel natural and comfortable with what she is wearing. Its fabulous style is worthless if your pet wants to take it off and never want to wear it again.

2. Fabric used. 100% cotton, fleece and neoprene are preferable because they tend to keep the warmth inside your pet’s body.

3. Wash and wear. Dog apparels should be washable. Buying sweaters intended for single use only is very impractical. You also have to make sure that the fabric is clean before putting it on your pet. Dirty clothes will make your pet prone to infections.

4. Durability. Durable sweaters last long and will provide longer days of protection for your pet. It will also allow you to save up money because you do not have to go on shopping frequently.

5. Price. Price is also an important factor to be considered. Most designer sweaters will guarantee you good quality but at an equivalently high price. But not everyone can afford it. There are still cheaper ones but will give you the quality that you deserve. You can buy a quality dog sweater at a reasonable price if you are just keen enough to look for one.
